Making your website responsive

Making your website responsive will have a beneficial effect on how hard it works for you.

If you use Google Analytics on your site, you’ll have probably seen an increase in the amount of mobile traffic coming to your site. If you’re a B2B business, visits from prospective customers don’t always arrive 9-5. Prospective new business might be visiting your site on an iPad on the way home or browsing on an iPhone in the evening. Making your website responsive means your site will work better for these visitors.

Why make your site responsive?

Most sites will ‘work’ on mobile devices if built properly. They’ll simply scale down to the size of the screen and force the user to zoom in and out to read. Making your site responsive improves the usability of your site by adapting to the device, making the site easier to use and read. This ultimately increases conversions.

Do I need to start again?

No is the simple answer, but this does depend on the way your current site is built. If it’s currently a WordPress-based site, then responsiveness will be achieved using CSS to add additional behaviours to your site based on the users screen-size.

If, however, your site is quite old, with HTML tables and so on, it’s sometimes better to start again. This doesn’t necessarily mean a new design – it just mean a rethink.

Your current site might also have issues that need fixing which would also be an opportunity make the move to responsive.

What other benefits are there?

Google prefers responsive (or mobile-friendly) websites. You can expect to see positive benefits on page rank, higher conversion rates from mobile visitors and the simple fact that you’re demonstrating that your business is up-to-date with modern tech.
