It is hard to know how small to go with font sizes on printed materials, especially with things like terms and conditions and price lists.

The most common font sizes used in printed copy range from 10-12pt. Sizes bigger than 12pt are best reserved for introductions, headings or titles. If you are going to go lower than 10pt then this should be secondary information like instructions or terms and conditions. This information is still important but isn’t the main message.

Even when you may not want a body of text to stand out it is important to make sure that the font size is still clearly legible. It is important to think about your target audience when considering font sizes otherwise you may end up with a product that doesn’t reach out to those that you wanted it to simply because they find it difficult to read.

Here are some examples of font sizes at work:

Ideally you should not go below 7pt for any font size. How small you can go will also depend largely on the font typeface you are using.

For example handwritten fonts are extremely hard to read even when at the average size of 10-12pt
Here are some examples of different font typefaces in varying sizes:

These examples demonstrate that joined up handwriting fonts are more difficult to read even when at a reasonable size (Evereet Steele’s Hand Font size 10pt and line spacing 14pt).

If you do have to use a small font then try to make sure you allow some extra line spacing as it can help the viewer pick out the words more clearly if they are given a bit of breathing space within the paragraph.

Examples of the use of line spacing:

If you are ever in doubt about whether your font is too small (or big) print out your design at 100% and check it for yourself.

While there are many free fonts available online the legal issues that surround them can be extremely complex. Free fonts are free because the creator doesn’t wish to make financial gain out of them so does that mean you shouldn’t either?

It’s a bit of a minefield but the only way to be sure is to go through the fonts licensing details very carefully before applying it to anything you intend to produce commercially. See the example below from Dafont.com. On the right above the download button you can see the licensing details for the font.

Some free fonts on websites such as Dafont.com don’t have any license details, this may give the impression that you are free to do with it as you please but again this isn’t always the case. Free fonts are best reserved for personal use only and not commercial. The best way to avoid any complex legal issues is to purchase your font.

If you are looking for a type based logo for your business why not get in touch with us and let us design something unique just for you.

Online brochures, electronic brochures, ‘flippy page’ brochures or virtual brochures all have different names but fundamentally offer the same thing, the ability to view your brochure online electronically and interactively.

There are several methods in how you can do this, all use certain software solutions which contain different functions and benefits but most include the ability to flick through pages, search content or link through to online content.

What are the benefits of online brochures?

There are several benefits in providing your clients the ability to view an online version of your brochure, these are:

1. Instant – view your products or information instantly without the need of waiting for a printed version in the post

2. Social media – people can view and share your online brochure via sites like facebook and twitter instantly

3. Printing – you can download and print specific pages if required

4. Add to a website – embed the online brochure code onto your website page, adding that little extra wow factor

Why should I do this?

The promotion of your brochure shouldn’t stop once it is printed, this is just the first stage. By creating an online brochure version it will:

1. Increase visibility – reach a larger audience

2. Promote – create links to your online brochure via emails, facebook, twitter etc

3. Understanding – this format might also help your potential client visualise your offer

So how do I get my brochure to do this?

Toast are experts in converting your printed brochure into an online brochure version and have done this for many clients (examples can be seen on our website in the brochure section). There are several stages we take to ensure that the online brochure fits within your marketing aims, these steps include:

1. Format – designing pages so they work in an online format

2. Method – which software to use that is compatible to your website/system

3. Creating – creating a file that is ready to upload to the chosen system

4. Inserting – providing the code generated from the software to insert into your website page

Creating online brochures isn’t the golden ticket and should just be a part of an overall marketing plan. Toast are experts in providing well designed and functional online brochures for companies, so why not talk to us today about how we can help you create your online brochures.

Also check out our blog post about epublishing.

How we solved it
We held a brand workshop here at Toast to evaluate what the Love Art Fair is and how it could engage with it’s audience and target market. We came up with the strapline “See it. Love it. Buy it.” which we built the branding around, creating a visually strong and accessible style. We produced posters, signage, exhibition header boards, flyers, staff tshirts and website design and build.

The first show was a success and brought great art to thousands of people, we’re pleased to say that the Love Art Fair will be returning to Milton Keynes again this year.

A surprise brown parcel recently arrived at Toast Towers, intrigued, we opened it to find a lovely packaging design book inside, but no-one at Toast remembered ordering it?

We looked through it’s pages, admiring the work within and then surprisingly came across some of our own design work, our branding and packaging design project for the Grown Up Chocolate Company was there staring at us, rubbing shoulders with some great work from great design agencies across the world.

The book’s called Choi’s Package, and if you’re looking for some packaging design inspiration, away from the same work from the same design agencies you see in many design books, give it a read, you won’t be disappointed and you’ll even see some design work created by Toast.

Like all design agencies we love design books, we love to feature in them even more, so if you have an idea for a design book or looking for content, drop us an email, we’ve got plenty of work that we’d love to showcase.

If you’re looking for a design agency to create packaging design for your product that will get noticed, get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.

How we solved it
Kiwani had a clear idea of what she wanted from her new logo from the start, with an appreciation of typography and design styles, it led to a really effective project.

Being a wordsmith, we created a marque for Kiwani that had a reference to brackets and punctuation symbols to reflect the service that she provides. The logo is bright, noticeable and flexible, it can be split down into the icon part only if needed and used on social media platforms etc. We’ve also created stationery design.

We have put together 6 key things to consider when creating label design for a food or drink product.

1.) What do you want your label to “say”?
You’re not always going to be able to personally sell your product to your target market, so you need your label to do the talking for you. What type of product is it?, Who is is aimed at?, How do people use it?, What does it taste like?, How is it made? and what are the ingredients?, all things that a good label will portray.

All too often the label design isn’t well thought through and a product remains on the shelf or not stocked by the stores that should be selling it as the core values of the product aren’t communicated effectively and great tasting products are missed.

2.) Style – what should your product look like?
Colours, fonts, images and illustrations all form part of the brand appeal of your product and all should be properly considered, this helps to attract the right audience for your product and gives it more chance of being picked up and bought. Your target market needs to understand your product and recognise that it’s for them. The overall look and feel of a product is key to it being understood, whether it’s a product for children that needs to be noticed by parents or a alcoholic product aimed at the real ale market, getting it right can take time and effort but it’s worth it.

3.) Good copy.
There’s no underestimating what good copy can do to help sell a product. Quite often the space for copy on a product label is quite limited so it’s important to be efficient with the word count. It can be a fine art in explaining what a product is in a compelling, creative and attractive way in very few words. If the budget allows it it’s always a good idea to enlist the services of a copywriter to produce the wording for your product labels, or atleast talk to your design agency about it, as quite often a different perspective works well.

4.) Printing and Materials.
There are lots of options when it comes to printing your labels and how this affects how your product is perceived. Not all labels have to be glossy, it maybe that you want to achieve a more understated look and feel and an uncoated paper with a rougher feel may suit the product and it’s target audience more. There are options such as embossing and foil blocking that will also an extra dimension to a product and maybe give it more a a luxury feel. There are many options but it’s important to consider how the label will be printed and feel when handled as it will give the right impression when the product is on the shelves, a designer or printer will be able to talk you through the options.

5.) Creating a range.
It maybe that you have a range of products, or plan to have a range of products in the future, so it’s vitally important to have brand consistency across all of the labels. If you’re initially creating one label but plan more, consider what elements will be consistent across the range, if there are to be future flavours for example, what colours would you use and how does that affect the initial design? Also consider things such as copy space, the area where the product name or description will sit on each label and maybe look to keep it in the same place on each label, consistency doesn’t have to be too restrictive but it ensures a professional look and feel which builds trust in the product.

6.) Do it right, get a professional in.
The budget may not always be there to enlist the services of a professional design agency, and if not do consider the above points when designing your own labels. However by using a design agency it could save you money and safeguard your investment in the long term by getting the right impression first time around. A professional design agency should be able to talk to you about your product, what you’re aiming to achieve and create a design for you accordingly. A good design agency will have a different perspective about your product to you and with an understanding of what you want to achieve will be able to design the right label for you.
